Definition: “any transporting or supporting of any load by one or more employees, and includes lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving a load, which by reason of its characteristics or unfavourable ergonomic conditions, involves risk, particularly of back injury, to employees”.
Manual Handling accounts for 33% of Accidents reported to the Health and Safety Authority (H.S.A).
Who should receive Manual Handling / People Handling training?
All employees who carry out Manual Handling / People Handling tasks during the course of their working day.
Course Objectives: On completion of the course learners will:
- Understand the mechanics of the spine and muscular system
- Have an awareness of safe practices to reduce risk of injury
- Understanding the 8 principles of lifting
- Be able to carry out lifts safely
Course Content:
- Introduction to Health & Safety Legislation
- Anatomy and biomechanics of the spine and muscles
- Manual Handling related injuries
- Manual Handling Hazards and the importance of Risk Assessments
- The 8 principles of Lifting
- Practical demonstrations and learner participation on safe lifting.
- People Handling Course: Practical demonstrations and learner participation in the safe use of hoists and slings, safe use of slide sheets, assisting a patient to sit and stand from bed or a chair, rolling a patient safely in a bed and other.
Assessment:
Learners will be assessed by means of a short theory paper, and on their manual handling / people handling techniques.
Certification:
Training records and completed assessment forms will be forwarded to employer on completion of course. Learners are required to attend training at least every 3 years.
Course duration:
The Manual Handling course is delivered in a half day and the People Handling is delivered in one full day.
